Volunteer Team

Here at Doorway, we have a dedicated team of volunteers who support our work and the day-to-day operation of the service.

Our Volunteer Team celebrated Volunteer Week this year by enjoying a picnic and games in the park. We also took the opportunity to acknowledge everyone’s continued commitment to the service. Thanks to Room2Reward  we offered special rewards to our two longest-serving volunteers.

Eileen has been volunteering at the Doorway drop-in hub since early 2021. She is our second longest-working volunteer at Doorway and comes in to volunteer weekly. She assists the Project Worker with running of our drop-in hub in the centre of Nuneaton, and reception duties. Every month she helps with our regular tombola raising vital funds, to sustain our activities for young people and providing resources such as our weekly cookery classes. In addition, Eileen collects weekly food donations from a local supermarket that we use in our weekly cookery class to support young people living on a budget. Eileen is an essential part of the Doorway Volunteer Team, and she most definitely deserves a treat!

Rei has volunteered at Doorway since early 2017. and is our longest-serving volunteer. Over the years Rei has maintained a full-time job, coming in to help on his rest days. Rei first started to help with Doorway’s cookery classes helping young people learn to prepare and cook foods from his native Portugal. He regularly assists in the drop-in hub helping process household donations and sharing his knowledge of DIY, giving his time to paint and decorate, tidy gardens, and support young people to learn day-to-day household management skills. Rei has recently turned his hand to fundraising for Doorway, as well as raising awareness of youth homelessness locally and through his work. Rei is such a bubbly, hardworking and committed individual and generous with his ongoing support, we were pleased to reward this dedication to Doorway.

"My inspiration for volunteering was to give some of my own time back to Doorway. Because they once helped me to get my own place. I enjoy the company of the staff, young people, and other volunteers. This makes me feel good inside and I know that I am part of what helps young homeless people feel happy about themselves"

"My main inspiration for volunteering is to do something meaningful with my time now that I am retired. I enjoy talking to young people and it makes me feel young at heart. I enjoy a challenge and no two days are the same."

"What makes me return to Doorway every time is the opportunity of seeing our young people learning new skills. Even with all their problems in life, they can be what ever they put their minds to"
