Celebrating Volunteer Week at Doorway

Our Volunteer Team at Doorway marked Volunteer Week with a delightful picnic filled with laughter and games in the park. The event was not just a time to enjoy the outdoors but also an opportunity to express our gratitude to the volunteers who continually dedicate their time and effort to supporting our work.

Recognising Our Volunteers

At the celebration, we took the pleasure of recognising the incredible commitment and contributions of our two longest-serving volunteers: Eileen and Rei.

Eileen: A Pillar of the Doorway Volunteer Team

Eileen has been volunteering at our Doorway drop-in hub since early 2021, making her the second longest-serving member of our volunteer team. Her weekly efforts include supporting our Project Worker in managing the drop-in hub, handling reception duties, and assisting with our regular tombola events that help raise vital funds. Through these funds, we can sustain activities for young people and provide resources for workshops, such as our cookery classes.

On top of her contributions at the hub, Eileen also collects weekly food donations from a local supermarket. These donations play a crucial role in our cookery classes, where young people learn to cook nutritious meals on a budget. Her commitment and care make Eileen an indispensable part of the team, and we are thrilled to honour her efforts with a reward, thanks to Room2Reward.

Rei: A Volunteer Legend and Advocate for Youth Homelessness

Rei has been volunteering with Doorway since early 2017, earning the title of our longest-serving volunteer. Despite balancing a demanding full-time job, Rei makes time on his rest days to contribute to our cause. He began by leading cookery classes, sharing recipes from his native country Portugal and teaching young people the art of preparing delicious meals.

Over the years, Rei has expanded his involvement at the drop-in hub, assisting with household donations and offering expertise in DIY projects. From painting and decorating to tidying gardens and mentoring young people in household management skills, Rei has proven to be a multi-talented and generous volunteer. Recently, he has focused on fundraising and raising awareness about youth homelessness, both locally and through his personal networks. Rei’s infectious energy and unwavering dedication make him truly deserving of the special reward we offered, in partnership with Room2Reward.
